MotoGP Title ‘Almost Done’ if Marquez Wins in Germany, Says Hodgson: “I Genuinely Did Not Expect This”
By \[Ahmed Elashry], July 1, 2025Marc SME News UK. Marquez is on the brink of MotoGP glory once again after a sensational performance at the Grand Prix of the Netherlands, where he claimed victory in both the Sprint and full-length races — despite enduring two heavy crashes during Friday practice. The former world champion extended his lead at the top of the standings to 68 points following Sunday’s dramatic race, which saw his younger brother and Aprilia rider, Alex Marquez, crash out.Marquez, riding for Gresini Ducati, took control early at Assen and held off a fierce challenge from Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi to complete a flawless weekend. His performance drew high praise from former world champion and current MotoGP pundit Neil Hodgson.“I’m trying to think of the last time a rider won both races when he wasn’t the fastest on the track,” Hodgson said post-race. “I know that sounds strange, but he just had a way around this circuit. He was impossible to pass.”The weekend had started with uncertainty, after Marquez suffered two major crashes in practice — one of which left him with a chin injury requiring six stitches and a temporary loss of feeling in his hand.“He looked second-hand, honestly,” Hodgson continued. “We weren’t even sure he’d race. But what he did… it was shades of the old Marc Marquez. I genuinely did not expect this.”With the German Grand Prix at Sachsenring up next — a track where Marquez has traditionally dominated — Hodgson believes the 2025 MotoGP world title could soon be within touching distance.“If he does the double there,” he said, “it’s almost done.”As the championship heads into the summer stretch, all eyes will be on Germany, where Marquez could take one giant leap toward his seventh premier class world title — a comeback few saw coming.
