Bayer Leverkusen Sign England U21 Defender Jarell Quansah from Liverpool

SME News UK. LEVERKUSEN, Germany – Bundesliga runners-up Bayer Leverkusen have announced the signing of highly-rated England Under-21 international Jarell Quansah from Premier League champions Liverpool in a deal worth £30 million, which includes a buy-back clause. The 22-year-old central defender, a product of Liverpool’s famed academy, has signed a five-year contract with the German club and becomes Leverkusen’s third acquisition from Anfield this summer, following the arrivals of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong at Liverpool in separate deals.Quansah made his senior debut for Liverpool during the 2023/24 campaign, featuring 25 times under new manager Arne Slot as the Merseyside club clinched their 20th English league title. Over his career at Liverpool, he amassed 58 appearances and was widely regarded as one of the club’s brightest prospects.Speaking to the club’s official website, Quansah reflected on facing Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League, when Liverpool triumphed 4-0 at Anfield last season:> “I was able to get a good impression of the team and the club when we met Leverkusen last season. A great team – they played the first 60 minutes like hardly any other team at Anfield.”He added:> “In the discussions, they explained to me exactly what ambitious goals they have here. It’s a great task and challenge for me to become part of Leverkusen’s current awakening.”Leverkusen’s Managing Director of Sport, Simon Rolfes, expressed excitement about the signing:> “Jarell Quansah is one of the most promising English central defenders. He’s fast, agile and a strong footballer. He has already left an impressive mark in a Liverpool defence that features world-class talent. With Jarell, our backline gains dynamism, speed, and resilience – a key building block for the Werkself’s future.”Quansah recently played a pivotal role in England U21’s successful campaign at the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, further underlining his international credentials. His arrival follows the departure of Jonathan Tah, who joined Bayern Munich earlier this summer. Quansah is expected to compete for a starting role in Xabi Alonso’s evolving Leverkusen side as they look to challenge both domestically and in Europe next season.Meanwhile, Liverpool are reportedly eyeing Crystal Palace’sMarc Guehi as a potential replacement, with the England international entering the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park.
