Tara Moore Handed Four-Year Doping Ban After Successful ITIA Appeal
SME News UK. Former British Doubles No. 1 to Miss Competitive Tennis Until 2028London, July 16, 2025 — British tennis player Tara Moore has been handed a four-year ban from the sport after the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) won an appeal against a previous tribunal ruling that had cleared her of a doping offence.Moore, 32, tested positive for the banned substances nandrolone and boldenone during a tournament in Bogotá, Colombia, in April 2022. At the time, she was ranked as Britain’s top women’s doubles player. An independent tribunal initially ruled in December 2023 that the positive test was likely caused by the consumption of contaminated meat. This verdict allowed Moore to return to professional tennis in April 2024, where she resumed competing on the ITF World Tour and featured in the main draws of the 2024 Wimbledon, US Open, and Australian Open. However, the ITIA appealed the tribunal’s decision, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has now ruled in its favour. In a statement, CAS said:> “After reviewing the scientific and legal evidence, the majority of the CAS panel considered that the player did not succeed in proving that the concentration of nandrolone in her sample was consistent with the ingestion of contaminated meat.”> “The panel concluded that Ms Moore failed to establish that the Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) was not intentional. The appeal by the ITIA is therefore upheld and the decision rendered by the Independent Tribunal is set aside.”Although the ban takes effect immediately, Moore has already served 19 months of provisional suspension, meaning she will be eligible to return to the sport at the start of the 2028 season.ITIA: High Standards for AppealsKaren Moorhouse, Chief Executive of the ITIA, commented on the ruling:> “Every case is considered according to its individual facts and circumstances. Our bar for appealing a first-instance decision is high, and not taken lightly. In this case, independent scientific advice indicated that the player did not adequately explain the high level of nandrolone in the sample. Today’s ruling confirms that position.”Career HighlightsTara Moore has had a distinguished career in both singles and doubles competition. She achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 145 and climbed to No. 77 in the doubles rankings. Moore has secured nine ITF singles titles and 18 doubles titles, including a recent win in April 2025 at the Palmetto Pro Open in the United States alongside partner Abigail Rencheli. With her ban now officially reinstated, Moore’s professional future remains uncertain. She will not be eligible to return to competitive tennis until 2028 — a gap that could potentially mark the end of her playing career.
